How To Remedy Flaky Shins, Instantly

DRY FLAKY SKIN

Our legs are one of the most neglected areas of our bodies – a fact brought to light by a big social debate a couple of years ago over whether people wash their legs in the shower. Many admit that apart from shaving and applying the odd bit of moisturiser, they pay their legs very little attention, so it’s no surprise that many of us suffer from rough, dry and even itchy skin on our legs. You too? Well, we have the ultimate guide and product range to leave you with instantly glowy, supple legs all year long!

So, what causes dry skin on your legs?

There are many factors that can cause the skin on your legs to become dry, such as lack of exfoliation, sun exposure, dry weather, shaving, the alcohol content in some body moisturisers and even hot baths and showers. These all contribute to your legs losing their natural oils. Obviously, we don’t expect you to go without a hot shower and start sitting in tepid baths (can you imagine!) but having a leg-care routine where you regularly exfoliate and moisturise will help transform those flaky shins into smooth, supple legs all year round.

"The skin on your shins is also very thin with fewer sebaceous glands than other areas of the body to keep this part of your legs naturally lubricated."
- Kate

STEP 1: Use a body brush

The best foundation step to any body care routine, let alone leg care routine, body brushing is essential for increasing lymph flow and circulation, and for buffing away dead skin build up. It also helps prime the skin, making it more receptive for an application of your favourite hydrating moisturiser.

Big results for little effort, you only need to body brush for 90 seconds every day, using a quick flicking motion in an upwards direction. This can be done in the morning before you jump into the shower or even during your shower, whichever is easiest, so there is no excuse not to add this to your routine.

A little note – be gentle! The lymph is close to the skin’s surface, so it responds best to light touch via bristles (you’ll never see lymphatic therapists using a massage brush with plastic nodules) and there’s no need to exert pressure that makes brushing uncomfortable and painful. Skin brushing does not ‘break up’ fat, so don’t be tempted to scrub harder over areas of cellulite. And even light flicks will help polish your skin too.

STEP 2: Exfoliate

A step that many people miss, exfoliating with a crunchy scrub is a great way to smooth and buff congested skin – and is also a great time saver as it puts moisture back into your skin during your shower or bath. If you have strawberry legs – an issue which often goes with dryness, exfoliating your skin regularly is the key to clearing your pores of oil, bacteria and dead skin cells.

Now, there’s exfoliators and there’s Exfo-Lite. Our cult detoxifying leg scrub, Exfo-Lite Stimulating Salts For Legs, is a born again event for your legs. A potent mix of skin smoothing sea salt flakes and deep cleansing Himalayan pink crystals with a shake of lemon peel, Exfo-Lite works to polish, decongest and soften the skin on your legs. And like all our products, Exfo-Lite is scented with the signature citrus aroma created for Legology by perfume house Robertet.

STEP 3: Try a body oil

Have you ever stopped to wonder whether it might be your body wash that is drying out your legs? The not-so-great ones strip your skin of its natural oils, leaving your legs feeling rough, itchy and dehydrated. Body oils can help to reduce redness and irritation with their easy, smooth application and nourishing formula that goes deep into the skin, leaving your pins hydrated and supple to the touch.

Need a recommendation? Our award-winning Cellu-Lite Salon Secret For Legs is the perfect targeted oil to bring dry, dull legs back to life. The non-greasy, results driven formula is rich in 100% natural aromatherapy oils like eucalyptus, rosemary, sweet orange, geranium and juniper. These oils work to replenish, strengthen and soothe dry skin, repairing your skin’s barrier, leading to smoother healthier-looking legs.
