Legs Talk: Carly Steel
From studying law to interviewing Hollywood’s biggest stars, Carly has done it all – from travelling the world with Tom Cruise to hanging out with Mariah Carey in Capri. Best known as a TV presenter and movie correspondent, she’s mastered the art of asking the questions we all want answered.
Our founder Kate chats with Carly about her journey from law to live TV, her leg care secrets (think lymphatic massage, dry brushing & daily red light therapy) and the red carpet looks she’ll never forget.
Kate: Carly Steel. Thank you so much for joining me. You are a girl who has done everything. Law, Vogue and now Entertainment Tonight. Emmys coming out of your ears. What made you go into presenting?
Carly: I studied law at university and cross examination is like getting information out of people they don't necessarily wanna tell you. And a kind of more glamorous version of that would be presenting. Where again, you're sometimes getting information outta people they don't wanna tell you, but instead of with a wig and a gown as a barrister in London, you do it with lip gloss and curls, but it's actually just as tricky. I've always loved entertainment from a young age. I also had so many questions for filmmakers and actors about movies and wanted to be involved in movies. So, I saw becoming like a movie correspondent and TV host as a way that I could ask all my questions, professionally and get paid for it.
Kate: Have you got a favourite person that we would know of that you've interviewed?
Carly: Tom Cruise, obviously, I've done a lot of the Mission Impossible tours with him. We did world tours, travelled many countries. Once, we did three countries in one day on his plane for Edge of Tomorrow. We did London at 7:00 AM, Paris at 2:00 PM and New York at 10:00 PM. And that was, that was challenging.
Kate: That is a schedule.
Carly: Running through like Newark Airport in a ball gown. Jenny Packham. It was quite a funny picture. Everyone from him to Mariah Carey. I think was a highlight. On her boat in Capri. It was super fun and she's got great sense of humour. And I always have fun with Vin Diesel.
Kate: He's a good one. It's, it's an exciting, exciting time for you. Now, tell us, do you have a leg care routine?
Carly: I get a lot of water retention. So, it makes a huge difference for me. Like my lymphatic massage therapist and when I've done the Legology treatment, they're like, wow, that's a lot of difference. So, obviously, I have, kind of sluggish lymphatic system. And then because I mean, I look like I can haunt Beverly Hills. I'm so pale. So that doesn't always look great on the red carpet or in photos. So, I really, it does like having a bit of colour on the legs. I think it's slimming and you know, gives them a bit of a sheen. And that's more flattering.
Kate: Have you got something you do every day that makes you feel good?
Carly: I do, I have a red light bed in my house and I do that for 10 minutes every single day. And it's supposed to help with, you know, mitochondria function, cell turnover. I think it really helps with like skin texture and healing because I'm clumsy and I fall over and so I get lots of cuts and bruises, so it helps with that. And I love dry brushing. If I can beat the water retention outta my system, let's go.
Kate: I love that. Beat the water. Is there a leg workout that you do?
Carly: I'm not a sporty girl. I like two things that I think you could probably call grandfather exercise. I love to walk. I'm not a runner. Like if there is a train that I'm gonna miss and you have to run for it. I won't run for it. Like I'll miss the train. The other thing I love to do is Pilates. You can exercise lying down on the reformer and that obviously appeals to me being a little bit lazy. So, I love doing the leg workouts on the reformer.
Kate: Now you were talking Jenny Packham earlier. Have you got a favourite red carpet outfit that you've worn?
Carly: So I would say my favourite red carpet dress. I've got two. One was for the Oscars. I think in 2020. It was a Zuhair Murad couture dress. It was stunning. I really wanted to keep it. They didn't let me keep it, but I love Zuhair Murad and it was stunning. And the other one was this Christian Siriano dress I wore to the Met Gala with a crown that was designed by this like Scottish designer, who did this beautiful crown. And so, I would say those are probably my two favourite.
Kate: So, one last question. Who's your leg icon?
Carly: I think Nicole Kidman has amazing legs. Like, I've never had a thigh gap. I've always wanted one. You could drive a truck through those legs. I've never had that, like, not even when I was a teenager, like preteen. I've always had like the more substantial thighs. So, I would say probably Nicole Kidman. Because you want what you can't have.
Kate: Nicole, we want your legs!
Carly: We want your legs!
Kate: It was lovely talking to you.
Carly: Likewise.
